To mark International Women’s Day, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) will launch a month-long free self-defence training programme for women at the Vishnudas Bhave Auditorium on Wednesday. The programme will be conducted in all eight wards of the NMMC.

Trupti Sandbhor, DMC-Licence, Social Development & Slum Rehabilitation, said, “With growing number of cases of brutality against women such as rape and molestation, there has been a strong need to equip women with the ability to defend themselves from untoward incidents. The self-defence training programme will not only boost the confidence of women but also enable them to protect others facing trouble.”

The programme will train women in various self-defence techniques that will prepare them to handle any case of emergency. Ajay Suryavanshi, secretary, Param Foundation, which is organising the training programme, said, “During the month-long training, we will teach women how to protect themselves. There will be taekwondo training and simple techniques of self-protection will be taught using props such as pen, umbrella, and ladies’ handbags.”

Spreading the word

‘The training programme is open to women in 15 to 60 age-group, who will be divided into groups of 30 to 35 members. The officials are confident that the initiative will be of great help to women in Navi Mumbai and are spreading the word on social media and putting up banners and posters to ensure maximum women avail themselves of the training.
