Mumbai: The Juhu police have arrested a man for allegedly cheating a Juhu resident by promising to help him buy property repossessed by a bank at lower rates, and then taking money from him claiming that the bank officials needed to be bribed. The police said that the accused is suspected to have cheated several others in a similar manner.

According to the police, the man has been identified as Mahesh Jha, and was arrested from Vile Parle on Friday.

“Mr. Jha met the complainant, who was looking to buy a new house, two months ago and offered to facilitate the sale of a property that had been seized by a bank after a debtor was unable to repay his loan. After taking the requisite documents from the complainant, Mr. Jha told him that his documents were in order, but that he would need to pay some money to bribe the bank officials so that the property could be sold at a lower price. He took ₹3 lakh from the complainant and since then had been unreachable. After trying to contact him for a month, the complainant approached us,” said a police officer with the Juhu police station.

Senior Police Inspector Sunil Ghosalkar said, “Investigations indicate that Mr. Jha has also cheated several others with the same promise, and we are trying to find the victims, so that inquiries can be made with them.”
