A 30-year-old woman from Rabale, who had run away from her husband around two weeks ago and was brought back by the police, was killed by her husband on Sunday.

Vaishali Mahalim was fed up of her husband’s constant suspicion and decided to leave him on April 19. Acting on a complaint filed by her husband Jayesh Mahalim, the police traced her to Pune on April 23.

“She had found herself a job as a caretaker of house and we brought her back. The couple was planning to get divorced and was to meet their lawyer on Sunday, but instead something went wrong and her husband killed her by slitting her throat,” said assistant police inspector Vivekanand Raut from Rabale station.

The couple had been married for five years and had two children, who were sent to their grandparent’s house in Bhim Nagar on Saturday by Mr. Mahalim.

An operator with a fabrication company in Rabale MIDC, Mr. Mahalim suspected his wife whenever she got a phone call. Ms. Mahalim used to make home-made bhakris and supply to hotels and caterers and constantly get phone calls over orders. “At times, she would close the door and speak on the phone and her husband suspected that she had an extra-marital affair,” said Mr. Raut.

On Sunday, when the couple did not turn up, the lawyer’s office called Mr. Mahalim. “He told the office that they would not come as he had killed his wife and locked their house and left. The person who got to know about this did not inform us directly. He had a discussion with his colleagues, spoke to the lawyer, and later the lawyer informed us. We left for his house to verify if what he said was true and found his door locked. We broke the lock and found his wife dead,” said Mr. Raut.

“Her husband’s cell phone has been switched off ever since. Only after he was arrested, the reason behind the murder would be known. Prima facie suspicion seems to be the reason.” A case of murder was registered with the Rabale police on Sunday night and a hunt to nab him is on.
