Repoll ordered at Andhalewadi

April 21, 2014 12:53 pm | Updated May 21, 2016 12:36 pm IST - MUMBAI:

Andhalewadi in Maharashtra's Beed constituency will undergo a re-poll on Thursday after the only booth in the village was allegedly captured by Bharatiya Janata Party supporters on April 17.

"We had written to the Election Commission seeking a re-poll here and we have got the permission for it," Beed collector and District Election Officer Naval Kishore Ram told The Hindu .

Mr. Ram said that Andhalewadi village had had no poll-related incident in the last 50 years.

Senior leader Gopinath Munde is contesting from the Beed constituency against the Nationalist Congress Party candidate Suresh Dhas.

The Andhalewadi village has a total voter population of 390. According to the police authorities, a group of college students arrived at the lone polling station in the village at 5.30 pm. "They took the possession of EVM and polled eight votes," said Navin Reddy, Superintendent of Police, Beed.

The police have arrested 10 men, including the polling agent of the BJP candidate. "Some of the arrested college students told us that they just wanted to have fun. They didn't understand the seriousness of their crime," said Mr. Reddy.

Neither the BJP nor the NCP have commented on the incident.
