Mumbai: The Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Mumbai Police Crime Branch has arrested two persons, who were allegedly found to be in possession of heroin worth around ₹1 crore.

The duo, identified as Gautamsingh Omkarsingh (55) and Bunty Ali Qudarat Ali (23) from Zalawad district in Rajasthan, are suspected to be part of a gang that has been supplying the drugs in Mumbai for several years. The Worli unit of the ANC received a tip-off. “We laid a trap on Chidambaram Road in Sion and intercepted the two. They had 1.4 kilograms of heroin each, and were arrested,” said an officer with the Worli unit.

Inquiries have led the ANC to suspect that the drugs, worth close to ₹1 crore in the Indian market and ₹2.8 crore in the international market, could have been brought through the Rajasthan border from Pakistan.

Four districts — Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Barmer and Sriganganar — share their borders with Pakistan. Over the years, there have been numerous inputs from central intelligence agencies about heroin and opium being smuggled across the border with the help of gangs funded by the Inter Services Agency. There have also been several seizures of opium and heroin in Rajasthan, said officials.

“We are in touch with the Rajasthan police to find out if the duo have any criminal records, and will soon be sending a team to work on the inputs that we have. We are also going through the call records of the duo,” said the officer.

The two have been charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and have been remanded in the ANC custody till November 9.
