A public interest litigation has been filed in the Bombay High Court seeking measures to protect traders transporting cattle during Bakri Eid from ‘self-proclaimed gau rakshaks’. The PIL filed by Shadaab Patel seeks setting up of a 24x7 helpline, maintaining a record of cow vigilantes in the State, and 24-hour foolproof police protection for traders transporting cattle to and from the State. The PIL states that it is the duty of the State government to protect from attacks citizens who consume beef, transport cows, store beef. The PIL has asked the court to issue a directive to all police stations to maintain a list of cow vigilante groups and its members within their jurisdictions.
