Navi Mumbai: A 28-year-old Airoli resident, who was eight months pregnant, was found hanging at her residence in the middle of the night on Thursday by her husband.

At around 12.30 a.m. on Thursday, Ratnadeep Hate was woken up by the cries of the couple’s 21-month-old daughter at their residence in Sector 1, Airoli. He found his wife, Deepali, hanging from the ceiling, and saw his daughter wailing, holding onto his wife’s legs.

“He brought down his wife and took her to Vashi NMMC Hospital, where Deepali and the foetus were declared dead,” sub-inspector B.S. Karkud from the Rabale Police Station said.

According to the police, the motive for the suicide is not yet clear. “We searched the house twice, but could not find any note or other evidence,” Mr. Karkud said.

Ratnadeep is a contract worker with the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). The couple married in 2013 and had been staying in a one-room-kitchen chawl unit at Sector 1 in Airoli. On Wednesday night, the couple had dinner at around 11 p.m. and went to bed. Deepali hung herself from the iron hook on the roof of the room where they were sleeping. “We have not found any domestic issues between the couple, neither was the husband an alcoholic. We are investigating further,” Mr. Karkud said.
