Mumbai: Residents of Powai on Thursday formed a human chain outside Silver Oak building, where former Navy officer Kulbhushan Jadhav stayed with his family. Among the 70-odd people, who stood for over an hour, was a 25-year-old youth whose education has entirely been funded by the Jadhav family.

Vijay Kanaujia, who had dropped out of school to earn a living, used to deliver laundry at the Jadhav residence as a teenager. Today, he is a science graduate and is preparing for the Combined Defence Services exams.

“Mr. Jadhav convinced me to study. He took care of the expenses of my education and his family continued to do the same in his absence,” said Mr. Kanaujia.

After his graduation in BSc, Mr. Kanaujia, at Mr Jadhav’s insistence, appeared for the National Defence Academy exams in 2013, but failed. Again, it was Mr. Jadhav who motivated him and under his guidance, Mr. Kanaujia started studying for the CDS exams.

“I last met Mr. Jadhav in January 2016 before he left the country for his business. He told me to keep studying, and that his family will take care of whatever expenses I incur, and they have kept his word. I really hope he is released as we all need people like him,” he said.
