A Navi Mumbai resident has emailed the Prime Minister asking him to ensure that the space under the Sanpada flyover is not used for dumping debris and plastic trash.

Bharat Samant, the complainant, said the flyover on NH 4 — which connects the Sion-Panvel highway — had become an eyesore for motorists and a paradise for squatters.

Mr. Samant has marked the email to the Union Minister of Highways, the Union HRD Minister and the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Mr. Samant said, “When the Public Works Department did not take action to clear the debris, plastic, and squatters, I decided to approach the Centre.”

He said many spaces beneath flyovers in the State were in a similar condition and posed a security threat.

Public Works Department’s Deputy Engineer Manjusha Dhande said, “The flyover is maintained by the Sion Panvel Tollways Pvt Ltd under the build operate transfer model. There is regular patrolling to evict encroachers and demolish illegal shelters.”

Ms. Dhande said the space under the Sanpada flyover will be cleared before the monsoons.
