Pak. boat crew plead innocence

May 01, 2015 03:09 am | Updated November 16, 2021 05:07 pm IST - MUMBAI:

Eight Pakistani nationals held allegedly with heroin worth Rs. 600 crore off the Porbandar coast have said that they voluntarily allowed the Indian Coast Guard to inspect their boat as they were oblivious to the contraband kept in it, the police said.

The accused purportedly disclosed this during their interrogation at the Yellow Gate police station here.

Indian angle

“They claim that it was when the Coast Guard officers told them about it that they realised they were carrying narcotics. These eight fishermen were on April 20 told by their handlers to take a halt around 215 nautical miles northwest of Porbandar until further instructions to rendezvous with a second boat, which escaped and is suspected to be Indian, to transfer the consignment,” said a police source.

The Mumbai Police Crime Branch, which is questioning the men from Karachi, Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan, said the Indian angle had not yet been traced.
