The Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) was declared the winner of the Association of State Road Transport Undertakings’ National Public Transport Excellent Award at the 2nd International Conference and Exhibition on Public Transport Innovation held in New Delhi recently.

NMMT won the award for implementing the Hi-Tech Intelligent Transport System in December 2016. The system connects the Turbhe, Ghansoli and Asudgaon depots with the control room at at Belapur. The system enables real-time online daily traffic management.

NMMC Commissioner N. Ramaswamy said, “It is heartening to note that the NMMC is the first in the State to have a working intelligent transport system.”

Shirish Aradwad, General Manager NMMT, said, “The command and control centre has been set up along with a system to monitor buses and keep a check on their speed. The application sends alerts if a bus is speeding or misses a stop. Complaints lodged by commuters using the app, be it about torn seats or unruly conductors, action will be taken.”

Mr. Aradwad added, “Systematic Operational Management, better fare management, more transparency, and prompt incident management are some of the benefits of the system.”

With a two-way communication mechanism between the control room and bus drivers, officials can immediately instruct drivers if they are found flouting rules or if complaints are raised by commuters. To help commuters, LED display boards has been put up at bus stations and major bus stands in Navi Mumbai.

To improve passenger comfort a mobile app, NMMT Tracker, was launched last year. It has been downloaded by 10,000 commuters so far. The app provides arrival timings of buses and information on bus routes.
