The Nehru Nagar police have initiated investigations into the murder of a 23-year-old girl who was allegedly stabbed in broad daylight in Kurla on Tuesday morning. She was taken to a hospital nearby where she succumbed to her injuries a short while later.

According to the Nehru Nagar police, the incident took place near the Annabhau Sathe flyover on the Eastern Express Highway at around 10.30 am on Tuesday.

The police said the victim, identified as Karishma Mane, was on her way to work when the incident occurred.

Senior Police Inspector Pramod Khoparde, Nehru Nagar police station said, “Karishma used to stay with her family in Suman Nagar and worked as a salesgirl in a readymade garments store in Dadar. Karishma was walking towards Kurla railway station when she was stabbed from behind by an unidentified assailant.

The dagger lodged itself in her rib cage and the accused fled the scene even as she fell to the ground, bleeding heavily, dagger protruding from her back. Pedestrians raised an alarm, which attracted the attention of some of our personnel at a fixed patrolling point near the scene of the crime.”

Ms Mane was taken to the Surana Hospital in Chembur, which is 10 minutes from the spot. She succumbed to her injuries around half-an-hour later while being treated.

Meanwhile, the Nehru Nagar police, having received word about the incident from the policemen who took Karishma to hospital, put nakabandis in place around the area and sent a team to the spot to make inquiries.

“We are still trying to find eyewitnesses who might be able to describe the assailant. The attack was over in a matter of seconds. There is a CCTV camera on the highway, but it does not cover the spot where the incident occurred,” Mr. Khoparde said.
