A defect in the motor of a local train plying the Harbour Line brought traffic on the down track to a standstill for over an hour on Friday, causing inconvenience to commuters.
Railway officials said the problem began around 5.30 pm on the down track of the Harbour Line on Friday, after smoke was seen billowing out of the engine of a Panvel-bound train. The train broke down near Masjid Bunder railway station and stayed put till technicians detected and repaired the fault in its motor.
“A total of 22 services were cancelled during this time. Services resumed after a little more than an hour,” Narendra Patil, Chief Public Relations Officer, Central Railway said.
The glitch on the down track also had a cascading effect on the up track, as CST-bound trains were delayed while thefault in stalled train was being worked upon.
Commuters were seen walking on the tracks to reach either the CST or Sandhurst Road stations, after which they took locals on the Central Line to get to the railway station closest to their destination.
Services resumed around 6.40 pm on Friday and gradually picked up speed after that, officials said.
The Harbour Line finally made the transition to 25 KV AC traction on April 10. The Central Railway said there are chances of disruptions during the initial weeks as the system will take time to stabilise.
