Eviction notices to SRA buildings stayed

July 26, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - MUMBAI:

Housing Minister Prakash Mehta’s announcement in the Assembly on Monday staying eviction notices issued to the buildings constructed under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) has brought relief to over 1.63 lakh families.

“The notices have claimed that the present inhabitants are illegal occupants of the flats and have asked them to evict. Those who sold the flats and those who bought them are from lower-middle class. The government should issue a stay to the notices,” said Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Ashish Shelar, while participating in a discussion on supplementary demands for the housing department.

Mr. Mehta said the notices were issued as per a court order. “The court had directed the SRA to survey such flats and issue eviction notices. It had also asked the SRA to take possession of those flats.”

Consider pleas

The minister said despite the court order, the government will consider the pleas of the families on humanitarian grounds.
