The rising number or accidents on the Mumbai-Pune expressway claimed six more lives in the wee hours of Tuesday after the car in which six college-going youngsters were travelling turned turtle near the Kamshet tunnel.
According to the police, the cause of the accident was rash driving after the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz in which the youths, all of them students in their early 20s, rammed into another vehicle when the driver allegedly lost control. The incident occurred between 2 and 3 a.m. on Tuesday.
While trying to swerve and avoid a collision, the Ciaz flipped on its top, killing four of the occupants instantly. Two others died at the Lokmanya hospital at Nigdi, hospital sources said.
Five of the deceased have been identified as Aditya Bhandarkar, Yash Shirali, Abhishek Roy, Akshay Bhilare and Jockey John Samuel. All six were studying at various colleges in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area.
This is the third such accident in less than two months and the second within a span of days.
On July 17, three businessmen from Pune, on their way back from Mumbai were killed near the same spot after the car in which they were travelling rammed into a divider near Kamshet.
