After several failed efforts in the past 10 days, the Mumbai Police Crime Branch, for the first time, have turned to the Aadhar database in Bangalore to identify a woman who was found injured in Malad and died before reaching the hopsital.
According to the Kurar police, the victim, in her early twenties, was found near a water tank in Pimpripada, Malad (East) on May 6. The police said some locals, who went to fill water from a tank, found the woman lying naked, her clothes nearby.
She was rushed to a local hospital where she was declared dead before admission. There were no injuries apart from a minor one to her nose, and the cause of her death has been withheld pending detailed examination.
Medical reports have, however, confirmed that she was pregnant at the time of her death, said officers.
The Kurar police and the Unit XII of the Mumbai Police Crime Branch have over the past 10 days made exhaustive inquiries in Mumbai as well as nearby Thane, but have failed to identify the deceased in spite of showing her photograph to over 2,500 people.
Finally, the Crime Branch will now tap the Aadhaar database to see if it contains her records.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Sunil Deshmukh, Crime Branch, Mumbai, said: “This is first time we are trying to identify a deceased through Aadhaar card records. We have sent the fingerprints of the deceased to Aadhaar authorities in Bangalore.”
Officials said the police showed her photos to employees of ladies bars and orchestra bars, as there have been cases in the past of such women falling prey to crimes of passion at the hands of obsessed customers.
The police have also gone through missing persons complaints in the city.
A team of Unit XII officials had on Tuesday visited the Malabar Hill police station after learning about a missing persons complaint registered there, but drew a blank there as well, said officials.
