Colleges asked to cancel offline admissions

July 29, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - MUMBAI:

Compelled by a court order to conduct admissions strictly online, the State Education Department has directed all city colleges to cancel all offline enrolments for FYJC already done by them. It has also warned them that such illegally-admitted students may not be able to appear for their FYJC and even HSC examinations.

According to B.B. Chavan, Deputy Director of School Education, Mumbai division, the colleges have been asked to refund the fees taken from students without any deduction and return any originals of certificates submitted.

A court order has forced the state government to conduct the entire admission process fully online this academic year. But, many colleges have been found giving offline admissions. Admissions for FYJC have witnessed many problems with the issue even rocking the Assembly.

Students will now have to choose from only 15 colleges (as against 35 earlier) in the second phase of admission currently on. “Students should check the cut-off lists of colleges properly before making their choices,” said Mr. Chavan.

As of now, 70,000 students have refused to claim admission in colleges allotted to them. This is even as 45 colleges in the city are facing zero enrolment. “Such colleges will have to upgrade themselves to appeal to students. We won’t do anything for them,” Mr. Chavan said.
