Chain-snatching duo with new modus operandi arrested

February 07, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - Mumbai:

The Anti-Chain Snatching Unit of the Mumbai Police Crime Branch has arrested two persons who entered homes, snatched chains and fled in autorickshaws. The conventional modus operandi is snatching chains on the streets and speeding away on motorbikes.

Officials said the accused, identified as Sanket Jadhav (18) and Aiyas Sheikh (22), were drug addicts and hatched a plan to make money.

“The accused would scout for houses where elderly women stayed and identified when they would be alone,” said Atulchandra Kulkarni, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime). While Sheikh would stand guard, Jadhav would forcibly enter the house and snatch jewellery. The duo would then hail an autorickshaw and flee. “We have solved at least 20 cases with their arrest, and are making further inquiries,” said Mr Kulkarni. Sheikh has 31 cases registered against him in Mumbai.
