On Goa’s Statehood Day, on May 30, its Prisons Department will launch an industrial block, which is a first in India. The block will house all workshops for tailoring, carpentry, paper making and candle making units.
Spread over an area of 1,400 sq m, the block will also have a gallery section displaying some of the products manufactured by the inmates of the jail. The inmates will be given specialised training in all kinds of craftsmanship.
The jail will also see a women’s prison block being launched on the same day. The commissioning of the women’s block will ease the pressure on the Sada Jail.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar will also inaugurate a football ground within the jail premises, which shortly will have a synthetic turf, and will also be first-of-its-kind in the country.
Inspector General of Prisons Elvis P. Gomes said that in the past one year, the prison staff has done commendable work. They have even installed a bio-gas plant within the kitchen. Earlier, the Chief Minister had described the Colvale jail as state-of-the-art correction home.
