The State government will hand over the investigation into road scam in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if required, said Ranjit Patil, Minister of State for Urban Development, in the council on Thursday.

Replying to a calling attention motion over the alleged scam of approximately Rs. 9,000 crore, Mr Patil said the Mumbai Police are investigating the case. “If the investigation is found with discrepancies, we will hand over the probe to the CBI.”

Congress legislator Narayan Rane said, “A number of politicians along with the members of the standing committee are part of the scam. Will the names of all involved in it come out in the investigation? The probe is heading in right direction. The police have arrested corporation employees and contractors.”

Those who are already behind bars are the director of Relcon Infraprojects Limited and two chief engineers and one executive engineer of the corporation.

Besides, two executive engineers and four junior engineers have been suspended, and a departmental inquiry is in progress.
