May 02, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - MUMBAI:

A nursing team member of SL Raheja Hospital who was admitted to the same hospital after she suffered a stroke two days ago became the 20th cadaver organ donor Mumbai has recorded this year. Her family gave consent to donate the 44-year-old’s heart, liver and both kidneys after she was declared brain dead on April 29.

While the kidneys and liver were transplanted into three waitlisted patients, the heart was declared unfit for retrieval. Three hospitals, five transplant coordinators and more than seven surgeons worked tirelessly to retrieve, transport and transplant the donated organs.

The liver was sent to Kokilaben Hospital and transplanted onto a 50-year-old man. While one kidney was sent to Nanavati Hospital, another was sent to Hinduja Hospital. The kidneys were transplanted onto a 39-year-old and a 47-year-old respectively.

A day earlier on April 28, the family of a 50-year-old donated his heart and liver.
