At a time when a number of top brass in the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) are under the anti-corruption bureau scanner, the ACB netted yet another NCP leader — Pune corporator Subhash Jagtap.
Following a raid on his residence on Wednesday, the ACB lodged criminal offences against Mr. Jagtap and his wife, Usha, also an NCP corporator, for accumulating assets disproportionate to their known source of income.
While conducting an open inquiry following a complaint against Mr. Jagtap, investigating officials found that the corporator had furnished false information about his assets, with an amount of Rs. 46 lakh unaccounted for.
According to Digambar Pradhan, Superintendent of Police (ACB), between 1992 and 2013, the corporator’s income from known sources amounted to Rs. 2.77 crore, while his family spent Rs. 1.36 crore.
“This left a balance of Rs. 1.41 crore with the Jagtap family. A further probe into the real estate assets owned by the family amounted to Rs. 1.87 crore, which leaves a disproportionate amount of Rs. 46 lakh,” Mr. Pradhan said.
Officials said Mr. Jagtap’s wife was booked for acting in collusion in with her husband. A case has been registered in Pune’s Sahakarnagar station.
Mr. Jagtap, who contested the 2014 Maharashtra Assembly Election, was the NCP’s candidate for the Parvati assembly constituency.
This is the second instance in days where a civic body-level NCP leader has been netted by the ACB. Last month, NCP leader and Kolhapur mayor Trupti Malavi, was booked for accepting a bribe of Rs. 16,000 from a local resident.
