Mumbai: A 40-year-old woman was found murdered, while her husband was found seriously injured, in their Nagpada residence on Tuesday afternoon.

The Nagpada police have initiated investigations into the matter.

According to the police, the couple, who have been identified as Zulfikar (45) and Sameera Dalvi, stayed in the Lachhibhai Compound in Nagpada with their two sons and a daughter.

“Zulfikar’s brother, Abdul, reached the latter’s residence at around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday to visit him. The door was unlocked and he found the couple lying in a pool of blood. Their children were not at home at the time,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Pravin Padwal, Zone III.

Abdul rushed them both to the Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central, where Sameera was declared dead before admission. Zulfikar was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The husband and wife had both sustained multiple stab injuries, although no weapon was found in the house, said police officers.

An officer who is part of the investigation said inquiries so far have not pointed towards anyone coming to or leaving the Dalvi residence, which has put Zulfikar under suspicion.

“Several of the couple’s relatives have told us that relations were strained between Zulfikar and Sameera. As there was no forced entry into the house and nothing was stolen, robbery does not seem to have been the motive,” said the officer.

He added, “Zulfikar is currently being treated, and we were able to only ask him a few questions at the hospital, to which he replied that he does not remember anything. We are conducting investigations to find out if Zulfikar might have killed Sameera and then tried to kill himself.”

Mr. Padwal added, “We have registered an offence of murder and attempt to murder against unknown persons under the Indian Penal Code and are conducting further inquiries into the matter.”

Zulfikar works as a manager at an eatery in south Mumbai, while Sameera was a homemaker, police officials said.
