A criminal, suspected to be involved in the murders of an RTI activist and a BJP leader, and his associate, Dhananjay Shinde were allegedly killed in police firing on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday.

The criminal, Shyam Dabhade, was a suspect in the murder case of RTI activist Satish Shetty in 2010, and also a prime suspect in the murder of 38-year-old local BJP leader Sachin Shelke, who was hacked to death in October this year.

Superintendent of Police, Jay Jadhav, said the local crime branch office received a tip-off that the duo was hiding in a forest near Chakan. “After conducting combing operation whole night, Dabhade and his aide, Shinde were located near windmills close to Varsai,” Mr. Jadhav said.

However, instead of surrendering, the duo fired eight rounds at the police teams who fired five rounds in retaliation. Both sustained serious injuries and were taken to Chakan rural hospital where they were declared dead on arrival, Mr. Jadhav said. — PTI
