Twenty two people have been reported dead and 32 (23 men and 9 women) have been injured in a stampede that occurred at the Elphinstone Road railway station on Friday morning.
While some of them were declared dead before admission, others died while under treatment at the hospital. Many are still being treated for their injuries.

6.00 p.m.: Congress president Sonia Gandhi has expressed shock at the Elphinstone tragedy. Terming it a man-made disaster and expressing concern over Rail safety, Ms. Gandhi said that such accidents could have been avoided had there been proper planning and concern for safety
3.00 p.m.: Union Minister for Railways Piyush Goyal visits KEM hospital. Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray also visited the stampede victims at the hospital.

1.55 p.m.: Senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar hit out at the Devendra Fadnavis-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, holding it responsible for the tragic stampede. Mr. Pawar lashed out against the Chief Minister's support of the ambitious Ahmedabad - Mumbai bullet train project, stating that if the funds had been used instead to overhaul the Railways and shore up the security of passengers, then the stampede might have been averted.
1.30 p.m.: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted: "Enquiry will be conducted by Government of Maharashtra and Ministry of Railways and necessary, strict action will be taken.
₹5 lakh announced for the next of the kins of deceased and all the medical expenses of the injured will be borne by GoM."

1.20 p.m.: Railway Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted: "Just landed in Mumbai. Deeply grieved at tragic loss of innocent lives due to an unfortunate stampede at Elphinstone Road foot over bridge. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the bereaved. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured persons.
Have ordered a high level enquiry headed by the Chief Safety Officer, Western Railways."
1.05 p.m.: Elphinstone bridge returns to normalcy. Security has been increased at the site of the disaster ahead of Railway Minister Piyush Goyal's visit.

12.35 p.m.: KEM hospital releases a helpline number for all those who need medical attention: 022-24107000, reports Sachin Kalbag.
11.30 a.m.: Senior officers from the Railway administration as well as the Railway Police are currently at the spot. The Railway Police will be recording statements from the injured commuters later in the day, said officials.
11.15 a.m.: Railway Police officials said that the incident occurred on the foot over bridge at Elphinstone Road at around 10:50 a.m. on Friday.
“The rains in the morning had caused a large number of people to gather on the foot over bridge at Elphinstone Road. At around 10:50 a.m., a part of the tin roof of the FOB collapsed, causing panic among the people,” said an officer with the Railway Police.
The people, in their panic to escape what they thought was a major disaster, ended up creating a stampede on the FOB, and around 30 commuters were injured and rushed to the KEM Hospital in Parel.
