The Mumbai Police on Wednesday registered a non-cognisable offence against Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam after he “clashed” with BJP corporator Vinod Shelar at an event in Mumbai.

According to the police, a spat ensued between the two leaders after Mr. Shelar turned up at an event organised by the Congress leader in his constituency of north-east Mumbai

“Mr. Vinod Shelar interfered and had a heated exchange of words with Mr. Sanjay Nirupam. Later, Mr. Shelar complained against Mr. Nirupam for breaking his mobile. Dindoshi police station registered a non-cognsiable complaint against the two,” said DCP Mahesh Patil, Mumbai Police spokesman, said.

On its part, the BJP claims that Mr. Shelar landed up at the event as Mr. Nirupam was violating the election code of conduct by organising an event after the code had kicked in on Wednesday.

FIR ordered against NCP candidate

In another poll-related development, a Mumbai metropolitan court on Wednesday directed the city police to register a First Information Report against NCP candidate Ms. Navneet Kaur, who has been allocated the party ticket from Amravati.

The Metropolitan court in Mulund in central suburban Mumbai asked the police to investigate if the actor-turned-politician forged her caste documents. Ms. Kaur is contesting the Lok Sabha poll on the NCP ticket.

According to the complainant, Jayant Wanjari, an RTI reply procured by him from the education department revealed that the caste certificate submitted by Ms. Kaur is “fake”. The complainant has contested the school leaving certificate that Ms. Kaur's father submitted to the Kurla tehsildar to avail the SC certificate.

Magistrate S.H. Bhagade observed, “The concerned police station officer is hereby directed to make investigation and register FIR as per law”.
