The Mumbai University (MU) has announced elections to the Senate, its highest elected decision-making body.
The Senate is the watchdog of the university, with representatives of teachers, principals and the management. It is empowered to pass the MU budget. The university has not had a Senate since 2015, thus giving most decision-making powers to the Vice-Chancellor.
“This is the first time that elections for Senate and Board of Studies will be conducted under the new Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016,” said Vice-Chancellor Devanand Shinde.
The election dates have not been announced. “The MU is fully prepared to conduct the elections. At first, we are updating the provisional electoral rolls,” said Registrar Dinesh Kamble.
Madhu Paranjpe, secretary of the Bombay University and College Teachers’ Union, said, “The polls will have to be held before February 28, the deadline set by the Governor.”
