Mumbai University (MU) on Thursday rescheduled the law exam for the second time this year, postponing two papers to January to avoid a clash with Company Secretary (CS) exams.
The new schedule was announced after members of the Students Law Council staged a demonstration at the Kalina campus on Thursday morning.
15-day gap
However, the new timetable has attracted fresh criticism from students, who say that it has affected their year-end plans. Parthi Rane, a student of Pravin Gandhi College of Law, said, “I had enrolled for a skiing course from December 24 to January 6 in Gulmarg, using money I earned from an internship. Now, I will have to miss out on the course. Only 20 % of law students probably also study for CS, so why inconvenience all of us for it? Also, the university could have simply changed the exam timings to avoid the clash without postponing the papers. While exams for two papers are in December, two others are in January, almost after 15 days.” She said many students had secured internships in January, which are now in jeopardy.
Fourth-year student Veer Kankaria said law students appearing for CS exams contravene MU rules, which prohibit students from doing two full-time professional courses simultaneously. “The rules say that students cannot work or take internships along with studies, while for CS, students have to do articleship as part of the course,” he said. Mr. Kankaria, too, fears missing out on his course at the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering.
Student Labdhi Parekh said, “Initially, the exams were to get over on December 19. Later, it was rescheduled to end on December 23. Now, it ends in January, affecting all my other plans. I may lose lakhs of rupees as my family trip to Dubai from January 3 may have to be cancelled.”
The MU had initially changed the timetable because of the delay in declaring the re-evaluation results.
