Model spoke to mother about Delhi visit

Cash-strapped status was the core of her worries, says a police officer

In one of the last calls made before she allegedly slashed her throat last Saturday, model and actress Shikha Joshi had told her mother about her plans to visit Delhi later this month, said the police.

A police officer told The Hindu that in the conversation Shikha had with her mother based in the national capital, the latter had enquired about her travel plans.

“Shikha assured her mother that after a court hearing scheduled for May 24, she would go to Delhi and meet her family members, including a teenage daughter,” said the officer.

Asked what could have then driven Shikha to slash her throat soon after, the officer said despite the emergence of a video in which Shikha had blamed a doctor and several married men, her cash-strapped status was the core of her worries. “What we have gathered is that Shikha did not have enough money to even make her travel arrangements and was even considering selling her mobile phone. Whatever little money she had earned in the past three months was spent on bills and sending some money home for her daughter’s education,” said the officer.

The police are yet to call Vijay Sharma, the cosmetic surgeon whom Shikha had accused in the video. The officer said that Shikha’s court appearance scheduled for May 24 was in connection with the stone-pelting incident.

Investigators also recorded the statements of some youths living in the same building as Shikha. These are the ones who assisted her roommates in rushing the injured actress to the hospital.

Shikha’s brother who had left for Delhi with her body will also be called back to provide some more details.
