The driver of BJP MLA Sardar Tara Singh was booked on Friday for drunk driving and crashing the car into a traffic police outpost in Bhandup.

The driver was seriously injured and a traffic police constable sustained minor injuries in the crash.

The Mulund police said the accident took place at around 12.45 a.m. on Friday at Sonapur junction on Eastern Express Highway.

The police said the driver, Mahendra Gupta, was returning after dropping Mr. Singh at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus on Thursday evening. The MLA was travelling to Nanded. On the way back, Gupta allegedly stopped at a bar, had a few drinks and was driving back to his house in Mulund.

Sachin Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VII), said: “Gupta lost control of the car near Sonapur junction and hit a Maruti Swift car. The MLA’s car then careened towards the traffic police outpost at the junction and rammed into it.”

Bystanders pulled Gupta out of the mangled car and led the injured traffic police constable out of the damaged outpost. Traffic police personnel then rushed them to Fortis Hospital in Mulund.

Still unconscious

Mr. Patil said, “Medical tests have confirmed that Gupta was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. He is still unconscious. The traffic police constable was discharged on Friday afternoon.”

Gupta has been booked for causing injury and endangering life through rash and negligent driving. He was also booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Gupta will be arrested on being discharged. He will be questioned about his movements between dropping Mr. Singh at the station and crashing the car into the traffic police outpost.
