Mumbai: A 28-year-old man allegedly stabbed his aunt to death before attempting to kill himself in Powai on Tuesday morning. The police said Tausif Sheikh was having an argument with his aunt Raeesa (45) when matters took a turn for the worse. Mr. Sheikh allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed Raeesa multiple times, after which he also stabbed himself. Raeesa’s daughter Usma took both of them to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, where Raeesa died during treatment at 12 p.m..

Raeesa’s husband Karim and Mr. Sheikh’s father Ashmat were siblings. Karim passed away a few years ago, and Raeesa was staying in Lucknow, where the family owns some property.

“Around a year ago, Karim and Ashmat’s mother Saeeda passed away. Before her demise, she had bequeathed the family property in Lucknow to Raeesa, while the property in Mumbai was left to Mr. Sheikh and his family. Raeesa, however, wanted a share in the Mumbai property, which led to arguments between them,” an officer with the Powai police said. Senior police inspector Anil Pophale, Powai police station, said Mr. Sheikh, who has been booked for murder, will be arrested as soon as he is discharged.
