Mumbai: A man was found shot dead in Dharavi on Monday afternoon. The police have been unable to find an eyewitness who saw the murder or even heard gunshots in spite of two rounds being fired.

According to the Dharavi police, the body was seen by some passers-by in a narrow lane near Milan hotel in Dharavi at around 12:50 p.m.

The police sent a team to the spot and took the man to Sion hospital where he was declared dead before admission.

“We found a gunshot wound to the man’s forehead and another round lodged in a wall in the lane, suggesting that two rounds had been fired,” said an officer with the Dharavi police. The officer said there was nothing on the victim’s person to provide any clues about his identity.

The police have registered a case of murder against unknown persons under the Indian Penal Code and are conducting inquiries. Officers said there are no CCTV cameras in the area and no one has come forward to provide information. The Crime Branch has also initiated parallel inquiries. “It is possible that the accused took the victim’s cell phone and other identifications to delay or derail the investigation,” said a Crime Branch officer.

The victim is in his mid-thirties and the police are preparing a sketch to be circulated.
