Shahabuddin Mohabali Talukdar (42), a patient with Mumbai's Bombay Hospital was booked by the Mumbai Police for murdering a fellow patient on early Monday after a brawl broke out between the accused and other patients including the victim.
According to the police, the incident happened around 6.30 a.m. at Bombay Hospital in South Mumbai. A brawl broke out between the accused and three other patients Govardhan Thakur (65), Prafulchand Parmar (70) and Janardhan Eknath Arte (66) outside the toilet of the general ward in the hospital building. The accused then allegedly assaulted the victims. All the three victims sustained serious injuries. Mr. Thakur succumbed to his injuries while the other two were admitted to the ICU and have been kept under observation.
The police have recorded the statements of the hospital staff who were present on duty when the incident took place.
The exact motive of the altercation is yet to be ascertained, the police said. But preliminary investigation suggests that the accused was allegedly mentally unstable and assaulted the victims with an iron rod after an argument broke out between the accused and the victims on who will use the bathroom first.
The police now plan to subject the accused to a psychiatric examination to ascertain whether he indeed has been depressed and the incident was impulsive.
"The murder section has been invoked after one of the victims succumbed to his injuries. We are in the process of collecting more technical evidence against the accused. We have recovered the murder weapon,” DCP Ravindra Shisve told The Hindu .
