The Panvel Taluka police have arrested a 40-year-old man for allegedly raping a 25-year-old woman with an intellectual disability. The accused, Ganesh alias Anna Mokal, was on the run after he raped her on May 11.

He had approached the victim, who was his neighbour, when her parents were at work. He took her to an unoccupied house nearby and allegedly raped her. He told her he would pay her if she accompanied him whenever he asked. “The next day, when he called her, she told her mother about it. The mother went to his house and slapped him, after which he ran away. The family registered a complaint,” Assistant Police Inspector Kiran Shaligram said.

On Saturday, the police received a tip-off that the accused was hiding in Sai Beda village in Panvel and nabbed him. “The accused is a fisherman and lived with his wife and two schoolgoing children,” Mr. Shaligram said. He has been remanded in police custody till May 25.
