The Thane Police have named actor Mamta Kulkarni as an accused in the Rs. 2,000 crore ephedrine racket that was busted earlier this year.

Ms. Kulkarni's husband Vicky Goswami was already under the scanner for his alleged connection to the racket, which involved making ephedrine in India and sending it abroad to an international drug cartel. The Thane Police had in April this year seized 18.5 tonnes of ephedrine, a precursor to methamphetamines, from a factory in Solapur and ten accused have been arrested so far.

On Saturday, Thane Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh said that Ms. Kulkarni had now been made an accused in the case after interrogation of the already arrested accused and other investigations revealed evidence pointing to her involvement.

“The key players of the drug racket had a meeting in Kenya in January this year. It was attended by Kulkarni, Goswami, and his partner identified as Dr. Abdullah, Manoj Jain, director of Avon Lifesciences, and Jay Mukhi, who was already under arrest,” Mr. Singh said.

He added that Red Corner Notices will soon be issued against Ms. Kulkarni and Mr. Goswami through the interpol.

“Some others from Bollywood could also be connected to the racket. Investigations to verify this are underway,” Mr. Singh said.
