Three months after it started digitising land records, the Maharashtra government has put 27 crore property documents online.
The digitisation work is part of the National Land Record Modernisation Programme (NLRM) which aims to give clear ‘titles’ to land ownership and, in the process, speed up industrialisation in the State, officials said.
The work started simultaneously in 358 talukas of the State in May this year, with a target of putting land details, including 7/12 extracts (culled from the registers of the State Revenue Department), online by the end of 2017. The project is likely to provide relief to people in villages and talukas, who, once the prject is complete, will not need to visit talathi s (local revenue officials) to get details of their titles. It will also resolve title disputes at the village and taluka level.
While the government has set aside Rs. 70 crore for the programme, it will also resurvey each and every plot in the State to resolve pending land disputes. A pilot scheme in 12 villages in Mulshi Taluka, Pune, will be extended to Nagpur, Nashik, Aurangabad, Amravati and other regions, said officials.
This is the third comprehensive survey of land records; the previous two were carried out in 1890 and 1930. The survey will cost about Rs. 250 crore with a healthy contribution from the Centre. “It is no easy task to scan documents in this quantity and then bring them on an online platform. We are trying hard to complete this by March 2017,” revenue secretary (Maharashtra) Manu Kumar Srivastava said.
