Journalist Jyotirmoy Dey was shot dead by gangster Chhota Rajan under the impression that the scribe had started working for his rival Dawood gang. “I developed an impression that he had started working for Dawood gang,” Chhota Rajan told one of the journalists after killing J. Dey on June 11 2011.
A journalist contacted by gangster Chhota Rajan after the killing of journalist Jyotirmoy Dey is one of the seven journalists and 41 witnesses whose statements have been recorded by the CBI in its 400-page supplementary charge sheet in Dey’s murder.
Rajan allegedly told the journalist over phone: “J. Dey was writing many articles against me in newspapers, hence I contacted him and enquired politely whether he has any personal enmity with me. He declined but continued writing against me.… like my gang has become weak and that I am sick, my loyal people have left me etc. All such write-ups by J. Dey angered me... I tried to convince him before killing. But he did not listen. I am not sure whether he was really close to the Dawood gang, but his writings made me feel like that.”
The gangster also called another journalist on July 1, 2011, and said, “J. Dey had crossed the limits. He was publishing misleading information about me.”
