The Navi Mumbai police on Thursday arrested a senior police inspector with the Thane rural police in connection with the disappearance of assistant police inspector Ashwini Bidre.

Ms. Bidre, who was posted with the Protection of Civil Rights unit, went missing on April 15 last year. Her family registered a missing person complaint on July 14. In January this year, the Navi Mumbai police registered a case of kidnapping under the Indian Penal Code. Inspector Abhay Kurundkarcame under the scanner due to his close association with Ms. Bidre.

Mr. Kurundkar was picked up from his office in Thane and taken to Navi Mumbai for inquiries on Thursday. “After going through the call detail records and other relevant evidence, it was established that Mr. Kurundkar had a direct or indirect link and was placed under arrest. He has been charged with kidnapping or abduction in order to murder, assault, adultery and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Prakash Nilewad, Panvel division.

Ms. Bidre was last seen leaving her office in Thane on April 15 last year. She used to live in Kalamboli, and had been separated from her husband for a year. Police sources said that Mr. Kurundkar and Ms. Bidre knew each other closely and first came in contact in Kolhapur, where they were both posted for a while.
