Mumbai: The report from Indrani Mukerjea’s medical examination says that she suffered from “simple injury” which took place three to four days before the examination, which is around the time Manjula Shette was assaulted inside Byculla jail.

After Manjula Shette succumbed to her injuries, Mukerjea, accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, alleged that she had been beaten and sexually assaulted by jail officials.

She was examined by the JJ Hospital on June 28. In the medical report, accessed by The Hindu, Mukerjea alleged assault on June 24, and complained of pain and swelling in the left wrist, right arm, and left popliteal fossa [the shallow depression behind the knee joint], and pain in the distal phalynx (the finger bone most distant from the wrist) of the right little finger. The examination states there were reddish-brown contusions above the elbow and over the right arm, swelling in the left popliteal fossa associated with tenderness, and tenderness over the distal phalynx of right little finger.

The medical examiner’s opinion says that the injuries are contusions which can be caused by hard, blunt objects, the nature of the injures are ‘simple,’ and that injuries occurred between the third and fourth day before the examination, which took place on June 28. However, the Nagpada police station noted before the Central Bureau of Investigation court, “no cognizable offence” is registered against her medical reports.

In her written complaint, Mukerjea said that she had been “physically assaulted by Byculla jailer Manisha Pokharkar while five others physically assaulted Manjula Shette.” Seh described that assault on Shette as “severe and gruesome and she succumbed to it.” She also said that the superintendent Indulkar and other male jail officials, along with one female official, did a lathi charge on her and that Indulkar “threatened, verbally abused me and threatened me. They said if we want to go against the jail staff by complaining about them, so he will do whatever he needs to and make my life difficult.”
