Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria to conduct an inquiry into why traffic was stopped for the Chief Minister's convoy on Sunday night in Mumbai.
"I don't endorse VIP culture. I have given standing instructions to all the Police Commissioners to not stop traffic movement for me," he told reporters on Monday.
On Sunday evening, traffic was stopped for some time in Worli to facilitate the movement of Chief Minister's convoy.
"None of the ministers should trouble the people like this. In fact, traffic is not stopped for any ministers now. If yesterday's incident has happened despite such strict standing instructions, it needs to be inquired into," Mr Fadnavis said.
He said that traffic could be stopped only in two situations -- in case of threat perception or any emergency.
"If there is a specific intelligence input that the convoy might face threat, or there might be planned protests, then it traffic regulation is expected," he said.
Talking about Sunday's incident, he said he had already talked to the traffic police and had instructed them not to disrupt traffic movement.
