Mumbai: The Rajawadi and Shantiniketan hospitals in Ghatkopar, where victims of the Sai Darshan building collapse were taken, were crowded by family members and friend of the victims, while doctors went into overdrive to deal with the steady stream of patients.

While those with minor injuries were taken to Sapna Nursing Home nearby, more serious injuries and bodies were taken to Rajawadi and Shanti Niketan.

Dr. Vidya Thakur, Chief Medical Officer, Rajawadi Hospital, said “People have suffered blunt traumas. Those admitted are under observation. The hospital has enough beds and staff and we are prepared to handle more patients. All that concrete collapsing would result in lack of oxygen. Those lucky to have crawled under tables or beds would be safe; survival would be difficult otherwise.”

Doctors at Shantiniketan Hospital discharged 20 victims after treating them for injuries, while 12 are admitted. “Three are in the ICU. One is a woman with a severe head injury, another woman has multiple injuries and fractures. A firefighter has a major chest infection from gas leakage.”

Dr. Priyanka Lokhande, Shantiniketan Hospital, said, “The society residents have been supportive by managing the crowd and making sure we could do our jobs smoothly. A wall between Shantiniketan Colony (where the hospital is located) and the building which fell was broken down so that patients could be brought in immediately.”

Ketaki Gosali’s cousin Divya Ajmera is in the ICU with severe injuries and niece Nirali Ajmera is still stuck under the debris. She said, “This is a tragic incident and we are very anxious about Nirali. I am glad that Divya’s husband is fine. The person responsible for this must be held accountable.”

Kajal Gada, a relative of the Shah family that lived on the fourth floor, said, “There were six in the family, and two of the kids were in school. Pritesh and Dharmishta Shah have survived but Pritesh’s mother, Ranjana, died. Their daughter Rutvi is still missing. They have lost everything.” Unfortunately, Rutvi was pulled out from under the debris on Tuesday evening and died on the way to the hospital.
