Heavy rain lashed Mumbai and suburbs on Saturday morning slowing down the vehicular movement in the rush hour.
According to the India Meteorological Department, in the 24 hours that ended at 8.30 a.m., Colaba recorded 80.2 m.m. of rain while Santacruz got 86.5 m.m. of rain. Intermittent showers are likely to hit the city, while heavy rain is expected in some parts in the next 24 hours.
Sudhir Naik, Deputy Municipal Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, said no rain-related incidents were reported. “There was a high tide and our machinery is keeping a close watch on it.”
The suburban trains on the Central and the Western line were running late by 5-10 minutes. “The services of the Central Railway have been quite normal so far,” said A. K. Jain, senior public relations officer of the Central Railway.
A civic official said vehicular traffic was affected due to water-logging in low-lying areas. “Heavy rain was reported in Vikhroli, Borivali, Powai, Goregaon and Kurla. BEST buses are running as per schedule and there was no need to divert them as the water stagnated on the roads is being drained out.”
The traffic was also affected in some stretches of the Western Express Highway, Santacruz-Chembur Link Road, and the intersection to the Eastern Express Highway towards Ghatkopar.
