A 48-year-old constable with the Government Railway Police (GRP) died after falling off a running train on Friday night.

GRP officials said Dattatreya Shinde, a resident of Kalyan and posted with the Wadala GRP, was on his way to work on the night shift when the accident took place.

Police Sub Inspector M. Kadam, Kurla GRP, who was at Kanjurmarg chowky on Friday night, said: “The station master at Kanjurmarg made an announcement at 10.10 p.m. informing us about an accident that took place between Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli stations. When we reached the spot, we found Shinde’s body lying on the tracks.”

Shinde was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, where he was declared dead before admission. The post-mortem examination revealed that Shinde sustained multiple injuries to the head and died owing to excessive loss of blood. The police said Shinde might have fallen off the Panchvati Express.

Shinde joined Maharashtra Police in December 1991 and had been posted with the GRP for the past three years. He was working as a writer with the Wadala GRP. A native of Loni in Osmanabad, Shinde is survived by his wife, a 20-year-old son and an 18-year-old daughter.
