The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary education (GBSHSE) has decided to delete a lesson based on Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova from the next edition of a school textbook.

The NCERT Class IX English textbook features a chapter on Ms. Sharapova. After the International Tennis Federation placed Ms. Sharapova under suspension for two years for her use of prohibited drug meldonium, Hindu right-wing outfit Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) and some parents’ associations had asked the GBSHSE and the NCERT to remove the chapter.

The GBSHSE sent a circular to all schools in the State on July 21 on the deletion of the chapter.

The GBSHSE has also instructed the schools that for this academic year, while teaching the said lesson, stress must be given on moral values, the ill-effects of choosing a wrong path and the need to imbibe good values to create an ideal nation.
