Mumbai: The arrest of four people on September 10 for allegedly duping over 100 job seekers in Mumbai has led the police to unearth a racket, in which hundreds have been cheated in Navi Mumbai, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh.
The police have found that after shutting their office in Andheri, the accused had set up a similar office in Malad, promising jobs in foreign countries. “We conducted raids at a commercial space in Motilal Nagar in Goregaon and another in the Mind Space building in Malad, arresting the four,” said an officer with the Andheri police.
Earlier this year, the accused had opened an ‘employment agency’ in Andheri, and over three months, accepted ₹1.16 crore from 180 people. They had taken their passports and promised to get back, but instead shut down their agency overnight.
“Inquiries have revealed that the accused have also cheated close to 500 people to the tune of ₹1.50 crore in Kandivali and 464 to the tune of ₹1.50 crore in New Delhi. FIRs have been registered with Kandivali and Pritampura police station. The accused have confessed to have executed similar jobs in Devaria in Uttar Pradesh and Vashi in Navi Mumbai. We are obtaining details,” said the officer.
The accused were planning to commit a similar crime in Goregaon and Malad when they were arrested. They have been identified as Amit Patole (39), Amardeep Chauhan (28), Sarfaraz Sheikh (43) and Abdul Ansari (29), and have been charged with cheating and fraud under the Indian Penal Code.
