Gadkari cleared, case against Purti stays

May 16, 2014 02:16 am | Updated October 18, 2016 02:37 pm IST - MUMBAI:

The Income Tax department, while clearing the former BJP president Nitin Gadkari of involvement in alleged irregularities in Purti Power and Sugar Limited (PPSL), says the case against the company has not been closed.

Mr. Gadkari is the founder of the Purti Group of Companies and former director of the PPSL, which came under scrutiny after media reports that it had received dubious investments through shell companies, allegations that cost Mr. Gadkari the party post in 2013. Earlier this week, the I-T department revealed that no inquiry/investigation was pending against Mr. Gadkari. However, a senior official told The Hindu that the I-T Investigation wing had completed its probe into the Purti case in 2012. It found several irregularities and levied a fine of Rs. 7 crore on the company. The case was then sent to the Assessment wing, where it is still pending.
