Mumbai: The opposition on Tuesday came down heavily on the government over the 19 female foetuses that were found near a stream at a village in Sangli district.
NCP group leader Jayant Patil demanded resignation of the ministers of health, home, child and women development.
The opposition demanded an adjournment motion and a debate on the issue. Assembly Speaker Haribhau Bagde, however, rejected the demand.
Mr. Patil said while the government is running a campaign to save the girl child, such instances are a result of the failure of the government. “The government has enacted several statutes to prevent female foeticide. But these laws have not inculcated a fear in the masses. Taking the moral responsibility, the ministers of the departments concerned should step down.”
Senior NCP leader Dilip Walse Patil said the government should immediately reply to it. “The ministers should share the information they have with the House.”
Public Health Minister Deepak Sawant said those women, who have aborted the female foetuses, already have a girl child. Those women are from Satara, Sangli, Miraj and Kolhapar districts. “As of now, the investigation has revealed that the women went to Karnataka for sonography before abortion. Prime accused Dr. Babasaheb Khidrapure has been arrested. His wife is still at large.”
Dr. Sawant informed the House that a cartel of doctors has been active in aborting female foetuses since 2009. “The government has taken a serious cognisance of it. I, myself, will visit the hospital on Wednesday and once back here, I will apprise the House of complete information about it.”
