The Mumbai police on July 14 registered an FIR against the Twitter handle of All India Bakchod, a social media entertainment channel, for allegedly making a meme featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The meme – a picture with alterations introduced for humorous effect – showed Mr. Modi looking into his cellphone in one frame while the second frame showed his face through a Snapchat filter, with dog’s ears and nose.

The picture was posted by AIB on Twitter and Instagram on July 13 and went viral within hours, attracting the ire of several people who took offence to it.

The police’s decision was criticised by many, who vented their ire on social media.
