Mumbai: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) raided a medical centre in Vikhroli run by an ayurveda doctor who allegedly stocked and used medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) kits.

The FDA officials said they have found some documents that show that women as young as 18 years of age have undergone abortion at Ruby Medical Centre run by Dr. Savita Chavan. The authorities were in process of filing a First Information Report. Dr Chavan is absconding.

Assistant commissioner Madhuri Pawar said they seized MTP kits and other drugs worth over ₹70,000. “As Dr. Chavan is an ayurveda practitioner, she cannot stock or use MTP kits,”she said.

FDA commissioner Harshdeep Kamble had received a tip-off about illegal abortions taking place at the centre. An inquiry was carried out over the last few weeks after which a team raided the premises. They also found 15 empty boxes of MTP kits in the centre. They found three patients admitted in the facility, one of whom was a pregnant woman. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of sex-selective abortions being carried out at the centre.
