Mumbai: The Congress on Thursday demanded a judicial inquiry into the irregularities in the list of farmers seeking farm loan waiver.

The Hindu had on Thursday reported that nearly 30% of the 26 lakh applications received from banks have irregularities such as identical Aadhaar numbers or similar bank account details.

Former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan at a press conference said this government had accused the previous regime of not providing relief to real farmers in the loan waiver announced in 2009. “But now it has become clear that the list with this government has serious problems, and it should go under judicial probe to dig out the truth.”

The Congress announced a ‘Janakrosh Aandolan’ on October 31, death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, to highlight the failures of the State government in the last three years.

Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan said, “The government’s performance has been disappointing. There is resentment among people due to the wrong decisions of the government.” The State-wide protest will commence in Ahmednagar district, home district of Leader of Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil.

“Demonetisation has caused economic loss to the nation and troubled people. As a mark of protest, November 8 will be observed as a black day,” said Mr. Chavan.

Mr. Vikhe-Patil alleged that the government changed the conditions for the loan waiver by issuing government resolutions almost every other day.

“The government does not know the nuances of (running the) administration. They should step back. The Shiv Sena should immediately withdraw support (from the government),” said Mr. Vikhe Patil.
